March 8, International Women's Day is a date that is celebrated around the world, apart from 1978, following a proposal of the UN General Assembly, to remember those who were pioneers in the demand for equal rights and opportunities. Four
milestones mark this day: the march of hundreds of women in New York against low wages and inhumane working conditions (1857), the International Women's Conference in Denmark (1910), the death of over 140 immigrant women at a factory in Boston (1911) and the strike of Russian women to demand "bread and peace" before the First World War (1913).
Since those early years, International Women's Day has assumed a new global dimension for women in developed and developing countries.
The growing international movement of women, reinforced by the United Nations through four world conferences on women, has helped make the commemoration a rallying point for coordinated activities for the rights of women and their participation in political and economic life.
